Project Description


To provide good quality seed of improved varieties of Pulses, Seed hub project on Pulses was initiated by Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India during 2016-17. Under this project Krishi Vigyan Kendras were identified in different states in the country

KVK Villupuram Seed hub Godown and Infrastructure

Aim:

  1. To ensure the availability of new seed varieties in Pulses.
  2. Production of quality seeds of Pulse crops.

A financial outlay of Rs 150 lakhs per KVK involving 12 KVKs of ICAR ATARI zone 10 under NFSM programme. Of which Rs 50 lakhs was meant for infrastructure development including seed storage and processing plant and Rs 100 lakhs was towards revolving fund.

During the year 2016-17, 8 KVKs of Maharashtra, 4 KVKs from Andhra Pradesh and 2 from Telangana state were involved under the project. Later from 2017-18 due to reorganization of ICAR-ATARI, Hyderabad, the KVKs involved from Maharashtra were transferred to ICAR ATARI zone 5, Pune, and 6 KVKs of Tamil Nadu from ICAR ATARI Bangalore were transferred to this zone. Thus 12 KVKs, 4 from Andhra Pradesh, 2 from Telangana and 6 from Tamil Nadu are involved in the implementation of seed hub programme.

Production of seed:

During 2023-24, 3266.42 q of quality seed of pulses were produced to augment demand from farmers and government agencies. This included 1950.53 q of blackgram, 687.02 q of redgram, 107.02 q of greengram, 510.65 q Bengal gram and 11.20 q of cowpea. Total: 1166.88 q certified seeds, 1486.69 q FS I, and 662.85 q FS II.

During 2024-25, 5679.29 q of quality seed of pulses were produced. This included 3641.57 q blackgram, 1635.17 q redgram, 225.94 q Bengal gram, 143.20 q green gram, 30 q mothbean, 3.41 q cowpea. Total: 3491.33 q certified seeds, 2029.04 q FS I, 158.92 q FS II.
